The POWER of Character

“I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

We would not be without it.

“PowerMoves Kids is a program that blends emotional, intellectual, physical and moral qualities into an integral part of our educational system. It is a program that benefits students and teachers in PE and the regular classroom through physical activity, character development and extended activities which meet state standard requirements

“As a school-wide incentive, PowerMoves Kids helps in developing the whole child and we would not be without it.”

Dr. Marilyn Denison, Principal

McNabb Elementary School

Spring, Texas

3 Different Styles of Learning

“Thank you so much for creating PowerMoves Kids! My fifth grade students and I love it.

“They said it relaxes them and makes them feel better. I've noticed that it helps us all regain our focus, especially after an intense activity. After a PowerMoves Kids break, we are all ready to go back to work.

“The character education portion of this program is reaching the children through three different styles of learning: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic:

  • Visual learning: The particular character trait being addressed (with its definition and appropriate quotes) stays on the board throughout the week. We also write about the trait during one of our journaling activities for the week.

  • Auditory learning: The character trait, its definition, quotes, and life examples are discussed in class.

  • Kinesthetic learning: As we physically perform the PowerMoves, our entire bodies become living illustrations of the character trait itself.

“First, we see, we hear, we move, then we become. Keep up the good work. God bless you!”

Patsy Slape, 5th Grade Teacher

Norwood School

Hulbert, OK

Works for Junior High

Students, too!

“My students are coming into the classroom asking for PowerMoves Kids. It’s a wonderful tool to help you maintain control of your class when you have 10 minutes of downtime or at the end of the day. Kids look forward to the physical activity of it.

“They’re excited about the fitness aspects, not realizing they’re getting the character training at the same time!”

Patty Webb, Teacher of Family and Consumer Science

Lake Asbury Junior High School

Green Cove Springs, Florida

Gets ‘the wiggles’ out!

"PowerMoves Kids gets 'the wiggles' out so we can focus! The children are excited about doing the PMK postures; making fitness and stretching a fun part of their day. Afterwards we're focused and ready to get back to work.

“The character education element has helped my students be more positive, and to think more about others than themselves. We like to say PowerMoves Kids is helping us become 'beautiful swans instead of ugly ducklings!'"

Michele Fisher, Kindergarten Teacher

Hulbert, Oklahoma

The PowerMoves Kids Program:

Winning the War Against

Childhood Obesity and Poor Character

PowerMoves Kids is the FIRST classroom program to combine Character Education and Fitness. "PMK" is helping children stay focused and on-task, while having fun moving their bodies to these easy-to-follow stretching postures.

Teachers are finding PMK helpful for transitions between subjects as well as for group focus and discipline.

By reciting a character-building quote with each gentle stretch, children are being taught character education at the same time—exercising their minds and emotions while exercising their bodies—and teachers are seeing the difference it's making in their PK-8th grade students!

PMK postures become mnemonic devices to help anchor in empowering life principles such as respect, trustworthiness, honesty and self-control.

As an added bonus, since PowerMoves Kids is fun and the postures, quotes and affirmations fit neatly into the school day, children are learning to take healthy stretch breaks for energy (instead of junk food breaks!).

Some teachers have wondered if PMK stretches are yoga.

No, PowerMoves Kids is not yoga.

The PowerMoves Kids program incorporates healthy stretches

that are simple to do and good for the body.

And the character-building quotes FILL children's minds

with good thoughts such as:

 "Honesty is the best policy."

(Miguel de Cervantes; Character Trait: Honesty)

and

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

(The Golden Rule; Character Trait: Caring)

and

Remember, with great power comes great responsibility."

(“Uncle Ben,” Spider-Man the Movie; Character Trait: Responsibility)
